In a tragic turn of events, Zoe Hawes, a devoted mother-of-eight and grandmother, lost her life during a horrifying crash on the M25. The incident occurred as she was en route to celebrate her 40th birthday with a holiday getaway. The heart-wrenching collision unfolded in the early hours of last Sunday, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

The sequence of events leading up to the fatal crash began with a police chase involving a stolen white Citroen van. Officers had been pursuing the van, which ultimately collided with three other vehicles, including Zoe’s, between junctions 22 and 21A near St Albans. Notably, no police vehicles were directly involved in the collision, and the pursuit had been called off by the time the tragic accident occurred.

A man in his twenties has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are meticulously examining the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident.

Zoe Hawes was more than just a statistic; she was the heart of her blended family. Her relatives, heartbroken and grappling with the sudden loss, shared their sentiments in a poignant statement:

“She was a role model to everyone and the center of our family. A very much loved mum, step-mum, sister, aunt, and lovely young nanna. She was a friend to many. She was very much looking forward to celebrating her 40th birthday on holiday with her husband. Sadly, a holiday and birthday she didn’t get to celebrate. We wouldn’t have changed her for the world, and she leaves an enormous hole in our family that will never be filled. We love you and will miss you forever xx.”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is actively investigating the involvement of Hertfordshire Police officers in the crash. The collision, which occurred between junctions 21A and 22, brought the area near Radlett and Colley Street to a standstill, leaving wreckage scattered across all four lanes of the M25.

As the community mourns the loss of Zoe Hawes, they also demand answers and justice. The tragic outcome of a police chase underscores the delicate balance between public safety and the pursuit of suspects. Our thoughts go out to Zoe’s family and friends during this difficult time, hoping for strength and healing in the face of such profound grief.
