Kenyan Woman Shares Harrowing Ordeal at the Hands of Kidnappers, Thanks God for Life

Claire Vusha, a gospel singer, has shared her traumatic experience of being kidnapped in Nairobi in 2014, expressing gratitude for her survival and recounting the steps she took to rebuild her life.



Claire had just received a visa to work in the Gulf when she was kidnapped. On her way home from the agency, she was approached by people who seemed friendly, but soon found herself in a strange place, unconscious, with insects hovering over her. When she regained consciousness, her kidnappers demanded she call friends and family to send money for her release.

“They took my bag, phone, clothes, and documents. I was in Kakoleni, a place I didn’t recognize,” Claire recounted. As the night progressed, her captors grew more aggressive, forcing her to say a final prayer with a knife pressed to her face. Desperate and terrified, she prayed for her life, remembering her late brothers and family.


In an unexpected turn, one of the kidnappers told her to leave. Seizing the moment, Claire fled into the night, crying for help. Initially, residents feared it was a trap and refused to open their doors. Fortunately, one person believed her and convinced neighbors to assist. Claire spent the night trembling in fear but thankful for her safety


The next day, Claire was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for counseling and therapy to manage the trauma. Despite the ordeal, she managed to reapply for a different visa and eventually moved to Qatar, where she now sings gospel music.


Claire expressed her gratitude to God for sparing her life and to the stranger who helped her, although she never got their contact information. She is now active in a church in Doha, run by Reverend Dan Mutuku and his wife Valary, providing a spiritual home for Kenyans in the predominantly Islamic country.


Reflecting on her journey, Claire remains thankful for the support she received and the opportunity to rebuild her life in Qatar. Her story is a testament to resilience and faith amidst adversity.
