The Prince and Princess of Wales have revealed their Christmas card for 2023, featuring a casual and stylish family portrait with their three children.

But eagle-eyed royal fans have noticed that the card also pays homage to William's late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in 1997.

The black and white photo, taken by Josh Shinner at the couple's country home in Norfolk, shows William and Kate smiling with George, 10, Charlotte, 8, and Louis, 5, who are all dressed in matching white shirts and jeans.

The image bears a striking resemblance to the 1992 Christmas card issued by Charles and Diana, when William was 10 and Harry was 8. The brothers posed in front of a lightly textured backdrop in white shirts and trousers, with William sitting in a chair and Harry standing behind him.

The similarity is not a coincidence, according to a royal source, who said that William and Kate wanted to honour Diana's memory and legacy in their festive greeting.

"They chose this photo because they liked the relaxed and happy atmosphere, but also because it reminded them of Diana and her love for her sons," the source said.

"They wanted to show that they are continuing her spirit and values in their own family, and that they are passing them on to their children."

The source added that William and Kate also wanted to contrast their card with the more formal one issued by King Charles and Queen Camilla, who celebrated their coronation in May.

The King and Queen's card shows them wearing their coronation regalia, including the Imperial State Crown and Queen Mary's Crown, in the throne room of Buckingham Palace.

The source said that William and Kate respect their father and stepmother's roles and responsibilities, but also want to show that they are more modern and approachable.

"They are very aware of the different expectations and pressures that come with being the heir and the spare, and they respect that," the source said.

"But they also want to show that they are a normal and happy family, who enjoy spending time together and having fun."

The source said that the card has been well received by the public and the royal family, who have praised William and Kate for their choice.

"They have struck a perfect balance between tradition and innovation, and between honouring the past and looking to the future," the source said.

"They have shown that they are ready to be the next generation of royals, who can connect with the people and inspire them."
